Excel extensions - Formats in excel
What are the extensions of Excel?
Excel extensions refer to the set of letters that can end the name of a file, which identifies the file as a document that can be executed and processed by the Microsoft office application Excel.
In the field of information technology, extension of a file or document is known as the set of letters that are at the bottom of the file name and identify the file type for the operating system to recognize the application that must run the file.
In the present article is collect, explains and details the set of extensions that use Excel to work with his spreadsheets.
XLS - Excel extension xls
xls excel extension is the best known and widespread in the spreadsheets generated by Microsoft Excel application. The files that end with the extension .xls refer to a file which contains all the information (data, formats, graphics, formulas, macros, etc ...) in a spreadsheet, which can only be opened and modified using the Excel application.
The xls is the default format generated by Excel from version 2.0 to Excel 2003 when you save any document or spreadsheet created with that application.
XLSX - Excel extension xlsx
The format .xlsx corresponds to all or spreadsheet files generated with the Excel version 2007 onwards.
With the change of the extension from the Excel 2007 came the advantages and disadvantages;
Advantages of XLSX files:
Less weight or size of the file, thanks to XML technology and file compression, the compression levels have reached approximately 80% compared with the same document saved with an .xls format, this leads directly saving space and occupancy hard drive and a faster time to download or upload Excel documents to the network with this extension.
Higher level of information recoverable in case of corrupted files, because the document is saved in different files which contain the information separately, for example, with this new type of extension is possible to retrieve information from a document but not the design (style and format) of the spreadsheet, the same document as an. xls would be impossible to recover the information or data as design.
Disadvantages of XLSX files:
The main and only disadvantage of using XLSX files is the incompatibility of these files to run with versions prior to Excel 2007, this has created much controversy since the great disadvantages that entails, has been common as people within the same department or company can not share files made with Excel because each computer has different Excel versions.
In order to solve this great problem of compatibility Microsoft Office offers 2 types of ways:
Save the generated file as binary workbook in Excel 97-2003 or Excel workbook, either save the information created in the .xls
Download from the official Microsoft webpage the converters that you can convert the file xlsx in a file compatible with any version of Excel.
XLSM – Excel Extension .xlsm
The format .xlsm is for all spreadsheets or files generated with the Excel version 2007 onwards which include Excel macros.
The main reason for the differentiation of XLSX files with the files XLSM is due to security reasons, with versions prior to Excel 2007 the existence of macros in a spreadsheet was imperceptible unless you have enabled the security levels concerning macros, this vulnerability was exploited by people who created computer viruses using Excel macros, infecting computers when he opened the electronic spreadsheet containing a malicious macro.
With this new extension, we can now identify that the file contains a macro, deciding for ourselves the possibility of opening or close the electronic spreadsheet in terms of reliability or confidence of the source or person who has sent us the spreadsheet.
XLSB – Excel extension .xlsb
The extension or format .xlsb was created to facilitate the compression process, saving, opening and operation of files containing a large amount of information.
The extension .xlsb was implemented from the Excel 2007 version, solving the problem of managing spreadsheets containing a lot of information, which need a long time to open, and the difficulty was to handle these types of files by frequent "crash" that occurred when using them.
The disadvantage of using this kind of file is that unlike the files with. XLSX these files can not be recovered partially, i.e. in the case of having a defective or corrupt document is not feasible to recover some of the information in a quickly and efficiently way.
